A building’s frame is the skeleton that supports all of the finishing features, like drywall, doors, windows, and even your roof. When it comes to new construction, framing is where your building begins to take shape. Once you have plans in hand, it’s your building’s framing that makes those blueprints come to life. FRAMING TIPS AND TRICKS
Douglas Fir Framing Material
It is dimensionally stable and universally recognized for its superior strength-to-weight ratio. Its high specific gravity provides excellent nail and plate-holding ability. The lumber also shows superior performance against strong forces resulting from natural phenomena such as winds, storms and earthquakes. It’s truly the ideal structural and general wood for framing lumber.
Georgia-Pacific Framing Products
Georgia-Pacific offers a wide variety of lumber products for residential construction and industrial uses. Georgia-Pacific softwoods include Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) dimension lumber and Western softwoods. Economical pressure-treated lumber is the material of choice for decks, porches, outdoor structures, and other projects exposed to the elements.
Weyerhaeuser Framing Products
Microllam LVL beams work well in applications all over the house. They can easily be built up on-site to cut down on the heavy lifting associated with beams. No matter where they’re used, they install quickly with little or no waste. They’re made from our proven Microllam laminated veneer lumber. This means they’re very stable and they resist warping, splitting and shrinking.
Metal/Steel Studs
Steel studs are perfectly straight. They don’t shrink or split. They’re light and easy to store, plus they resist fire, insects, and rot. The overall cost between steel framing and wood framing is about the same. Note that heavy cabinets such as overhead kitchen cabinets, may not be strong enough to support the weight, even with drywall on them.

Slate Shims
A shim is a thin and often tapered or wedged piece of material used to fill small gaps or spaces between objects. These are heavy-duty plastic shims used for leveling the slate quickly and easily. Each shim is flat on the bottom and ribbed on both sides to lock the shim in place. Each one measures about 3″x1-1/4″x5/16″.
Steel-I-Beams
A steel I-beam is a type of joist or girder made from structural steel. I-beams are used as major support trusses in building, to ensure that a structure will be physically sound. The shape of a steel I-beam strongly resembles a capital “I” in cross-section. The steel I-beam has a strong central core capped with flanges on either side.
Trusses
Trusses are a building material used in structural framing systems. It is made up of a series of wooden triangles and framing members, which are connected by metal plates. This triangular shape gives the truss strength and stability over traditional framing. Trusses are often referred to as open web systems due to the web-like appearance by the pattern of the triangles.
Pressure Treated Framing
You can use pressure-treated wood for framing. Pressure-treated wood is only recommended for outdoor applications and where framing touches the foundation. Pressure-treated wood comes as the more rot-resistant, insect-resistant, and long-lasting version of pressure-treated wood for framing.
